Shutting Down Dave

Well, hello. For anyone who does not know me my name is Katie Hennemuth. This is my blog ( so lovingly set up for me by my friend Julie) about my journey in dealing with Stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma and my tumor that I have named Dave. Giving my primary tumor a name has given me “someone” to be mad at and channel my energy toward.  I KNOW I am going to beat Dave and every single hideous cancer cell that he has spread throughout my body. I have never been so sure about anything in my life. I feel that have been chosen for this journey and ya betta watch out Dave because me and my support system #teamkate are COMING FOR YA!

By way of introduction, I am 29, engaged to my AMAZING fiancé and I am a Neuro- Surgical ICU Nurse (NOT a writer so bear with me). The purpose of the blog is to share my experiences, the good the bad and the ugly, update friends and family, and hopefully help another cancer buddy along the way. In my short time as a cancer patient, I have learned the importance of talking to others dealing with this disease, in any way shape or form, and how incredibly helpful it can be. The outpouring of support, love, prayers and thoughts that I have received thus far is literally mind blowing. I feel LUCKY and that I must pay this experience forward in any way that I can. So if  my stupid/silly/sad/mad/happy/insulting  thoughts on my road to CURE can aid anyone, then my goal is reached.  So here we go!!

  1. Hi Katie,

I’ve never met you, but I’m Julie’s brother-in-law. I have heard about Dave and I have told Julie that you are going to beat him from the get go. You have a great support system and a strong will to win, which is huge! I am on your team and I have been/will be sending positive thoughts your way from MA!!

  11. It is inspirational and rewarding to be able to be part of your journey knowing you from your first days–yes there was I interlude but that does not erase the initial memories of ‘I want a juicy box’ or ‘icky..move it now’…..your faith alone is a testament of the permanent demise of ‘Dave’….I’m initial for the long haul…..Leslee

  14. Katie,
I am going to echo the woman who said, “My your faith be stronger than your fears!’ because faith is the source of the courage and strength you are showing. And if there are days when you are just too tried to push,
remember, that are all here to do the pushing on those days!

  16. Katie,
I am your 2nd cousin, once removed, on your Dad’s side, having the same maiden name as your grandmother Jean Kane (spelled Jeanne Kane by your grandmother). I too am a nurse and a cancer survivor (breast). I totally applaud your positive, can do attitude. It is the best way to beat and shut down the enemy, AKA Dave!!
I looked at my treatment as life giving and tried my best to gratefully accept it into my life during that time.
I just wanted you to know that I and my husband Peter are sending positive thoughts and energy and love your way. You are young and strong and beautiful…. and you WILL prevail. Believe in yourself Katie, you can do this!!
